happy birthday mum

Filed under: General — susie at 11:13 am on Wednesday, October 22, 2003

argh, i’m really hungry and it’s still ages until dinner time.

in other news, today i have mostly been writing my thesis plan. this scares me, especially when i get to planning the chapters i haven’t even done the experiments for yet. don’t panic…don’t panic..don’t panic. ah well, too hungry to panic at the moment.

last night we planted 2 rose bushes. this wouldn’t be a notable achievement at all if it wasn’t for the fact that it took about half an hour, 2 trowels, a spade and a pickaxe to dig 2 little holes. on the plus side, we uncovered enough bricks/glass to build an extension if we wanted.

saturday is car boot day. our spare bedroom is full now of things we need to get rid of, with a little path carved through it all so sweepy can still get to the windowsill. apparently it’s coming to the end of the car boot “season”. who knew that car boots had seasons?

hmm, this is a mundane entry. maybe i should think of something exciting before i just blahblah on. next time gadget…next time.

i can’t believe it’s wednesday already.

business

i have just realised something. i wanted the title for this entry to say how busy i have been lately, but busy-ness is business. that must be where that word comes from.

so anyway, this week has been full with a scan day, a couple of seminars and today i did a lecture for a group of msc students on the design and interpretation of fmri studies. i think i got everything across to them okay. oh, and i found this website today which shows what happens when you take metallic objects near an mri scanner. i have had all the safety stuff drilled in to me, especially when i was practically rugby tackled at the door of the scanner room when i was carrying a pair of scissors. still it’s impressive to see what can happen.

had a really horrible dream all about needles last night. the whole world had to be vaccinated against something icky, but i spent all night running away from the nurses with the needles. haven’t had an injection now since i was 15. i do wonder how i will be when i have to have one again.

we have been collecting together all our stuff for a big car boot sale we’re going to have to raise money for the wedding fund. last weekend we packed up lots of stuff from birmingham home. dad seemed quite upset to see me take all my childhood things out of my room. mum was glad for the extra space though. i even brought back my life size cardboard cutout of captain picard. i’m going to set him up next to our stall with a sign around his neck saying “carl and susie’s car boot”. he can be our marketing man.

this weekend we are going to wrexham. hopefully it will be a relaxing weekend with lots of sleep because i can’t remember the last one of those we had.

thank crunchie it’s friday tomorrow.

impressive thing

Filed under: General — susie at 1:06 pm on Monday, October 6, 2003

saw this on news.bbc today. sir peter mansfield is the top guy in the magnetic resonance centre at the university of nottingham, which (for those who don’t know already) is where i spend a large amount of my phd days. i wondered why they had changed the sign outside the door to say “the sir peter mansfield magnetic resonance centre”. i just assumed he must have died or something. i’m just really impressed that someone i walk past in the corridor now and then has won a nobel prize. maybe i should get his autograph.

so, congratulations and £775,000 to him and kudos to me for doing my phd in such a pioneering and world renowned department.
