christmas was great. really great. feel sad that it has gone now for another year. hoorah for family.

mm baileys. so nice. new years eve now. but not really since we haven’t gone to bed and woken up yet. tomorrow it will be properly new years eve. i think we are going to alex’s to party. will see huggiebun too. will be cool since haven’t seen him since our engagement party in derby hall. gosh, that was ages ago.

things are really good. last year brought good things and i think the next year will bring the best things ever. i hope so anyway.

lord of the rings: the return of the king is a truly great film. we saw it last week and i loved it. can’t wait to get the extended editions of both the 2nd and 3rd films to complete our extended collection. determined to read the books now, although our lord of the rings books have mysteriously vanished. must start with the hobbit though.

christmas is nearly here (hoorah). we got our snowman and santa candles out last night. ironically santa is the one who now has no face, the snowman isn’t melting as quick. we’ll be going down to brum for christmas day, staying at mum and dad’s for the family christmas dinner and then going over to auntie cathy’s and uncle laurence’s to see the rest of the family. apparently chris (my big big brother) has got a murder mystery for us to solve. we are supposed to be getting our characters sent to us in the post so we can rehearse. should be really fun.

me and carl will be going on the traditional family boxing day walk again (yey). i have managed not to miss one yet, i think. we go around cofton lakes, past the haunted disused railway line, past the house with the round tower where anne boleyn was executed and now haunts (so says grandad), walk by the /huge/ houses that everyone wants to live in and to the barnt green inn for a recuperating drink.

we’ll be going over to wrexham after the walk to see carl’s family, so the whole christmas weekend will be busy with cool things. and then we will come home and it will be the weekend again. hopefully the welsh mountains will be covered with snow again. they were magical and heidi-like last year.

for new year it looks like we are going to a friend’s house. not sure whether i will be able to drink or not yet though, since i may have to drive us home again. we’ll have to see. sometimes it’s pooey living so far out of nottingham. actually, most days it is. i think after the wedding we will be seriously looking to move back to long eaton or somewhere else nice that is far enough out of nottingham so we can pretend we don’t live near it, but not so far that we can’t get to work easily.

happy christmas.

no food, lots of food and then flying food

just had a great weekend down in brum. today is being quite good too. strange for a monday.

lets do the weekendly round up in a neat and structured way for once:

friday
——-
we were due to meet up with carl’s flying club friends and go out for curry and beers. i like these people. they are (mostly) people who would do anything for you and who are also fun to be around and chat with, when they aren’t talking about plans/wood/wingspans etc. however, this is the only curry and beers night i have been on that didn’t actually involve curry. not that great when you have only had 2 and a half sausage rolls all day in anticipation of curried goodness. that, coupled with the fact that i was driving home so could only have coke, made it an average night with a twinge of disappointment and a bout of sulkiness. never mind, at least i had an excuse to buy a fantastic new top.

saturday
———-
i drove us down to brum. got flashed by a speed camera on the way. if we get a fine for that then i will be really pooed off. was only going about 2mph over the speed limit due to natural drifting when not staring at the speedo whilst driving. the other 2 lanes of traffic were whooshing past me.

anyway, mum, dad, chris (bigbig brother), jill (sister-in-law), me and carl went to go visit our wedding cars. we were all really impressed with them and so we booked them. the bridal car is going to be a 1929 hudson (think american gangster, in particular the gangsters in whacky races) and the bridesmaids and some other people will be going in an austin princess, painted cream and black to match the hudson. so that was all good. we also got a leaflet for a florist who we think is a distinct possibility for the wedding flowers. it’s all going along nicely.

helped mum and dad put up their decorations. always scary doing the traditional blue-tacking of our old christmas cards to the doors. they all have dates on the back saying when we made them and i found one that i made when i was 3. 21 years ago. no wonder the nose from my snowman had fallen off. other decorational highlights include the cereal box santas, the papier mache robin and the loo roll snowman. mum and dad had their usual arguments about christmas lights and tinsel (”we don’t need any more lights. if you want more bloody lights you can bloody well put them up yourself”).

in the evening me and carl went out to frankie and benny’s for a romantic meal for 2. yesterday was our official 5 year anniversary you see. we made up for the non-appearance of curry the night before by ordering shed loads. it was so nice though. shame we had to leave half of it. we had cocktails though and they were so gorgeous. i could have drank mine all night. baileys, amaretto, something else and cream. so smooooth.

sunday
——–
this was the family dinner day. we went down the club and met up with nanny and grandad, auntie dot and my other brother michael. we had a really good time and i was sad to drive home after that.

i always feel quite sad to leave birmingham again. all my family live within a mile or two of each other. i am the only one not to have returned to brum again. so i hear everyone planning to meet up for the midweek family pub outing or this show or that shopping trip and it’s sometimes like i’m an outsider looking in on a cosy family scene. like those really sad bits of christmas films, where cold and lonely people stare through the window at a family opening their pressies under their tree. carl’s family are a lot more spread out so i don’t think it’s the same for him.

today
——-
was the christmas dinner for our research group. i was a bit apprehensive about it because i didn’t want to go there and have to talk about work all the time. it was really good though. i was sat next to my supervisor, but he chatted really easily about everything but work. the food was nice and we all had a laugh. i tried my hardest not to be as messy an eater as i usually am. was doing really well until i somehow catapulted a mayonnaise covered piece of lettuce into the air and down the front of my top. i don’t think anyone noticed though. i had to leave it there until the next loo trip.

how do these things happen?
