we spent a long weekend in lincoln and had the best time ever.

lincoln is a very pretty place. full of cobbled streets and ye olde buildings, with a spectacular cathedral dominating the skyline. i’m not usually one for cathedrals. they are very imposing and scary and full of epitaphs written on the floors that i try my hardest not to step on. maybe i’m just getting more appreciative as i get older and become more like my mother (ooer).

once you get out of lincoln it is surrounded by fields and nice little villages. we stayed in one of these, on a farm with chickens, pheasants, hares, owls and the friendliest dog in the world. oh, and also some huge moth type creatures who come out at dusk and chase you up the lanes, no matter how fast you think you are running.

going around lincoln as a tourist was nice, but of course we were here for raf waddington’s international airshow and it was amazing. i loved the tornado with its variable pitch wings and the harrier with its thrust vectoring abilities. oo, listen to me and my terminology. i just mean that i think it’s so cool the way the tornado sweeps back its wings for going uber fast, and the way the harrier can hover and bow and spin around in midair. i was also really impressed with the red arrows (of course), their italian and spanish counterparts and will curtis who does really scary aerobatics. but really, i was just so amazed by the things these pilots were doing. can’t imagine what it felt like for them to be throwing these machines around the sky like that. i think the raf would be a really cool place for a career if it wasn’t for the whole wars and killing people thing. i would love to be able to do what these people can do. whether i have the bottle or not is another matter. maybe if my phd goes tits up i could find out. hmm, i could be the first female red arrow…tim henman could win wimbledon and george bush could start making sense. good daydreaming fodder.
