stuffy stuffy stuff

please, not the 9 o’clock news

i listened to the 9am news on the radio as we travelled in to work this morning and there were two things on there that annoyed me.

1. this whole thing with harry and his fancy dress party. everyone is getting so het up about it. it wasn’t the best choice of costume, but he has said sorry so just let it go. i can’t see any benefit to making him jump through people’s hoops to prove that he really is sorry.

2. the newsreader mentioned that the government were considering putting a levy on alcohol (an addition to the normal tax) to pay for the extra policing that will be needed under their plans for 24 hour licensing laws. this /really/ annoys me. i haven’t met anyone who actually *wants* this law. it seems to be some random idea from the government that they like because it’s easy to implement, and it makes them look like a nice friendly government who just want everyone to have a good time. to make everyone pay more for something that no one wants or needs is just unfair and far too millenium dome like. i might be wrong i suppose, there might be this underground movement that has been tirelessly campaigning for the right to sit in a pub all day /and/ all night. just a bit too far underground to notice.

I’m in favour of licensing hour reform. So-called “24 hour licensing” wouldn’t lead to pubs being open 24/7, mostly, it would just lead to a staggering of opening/closing times, and I think that’s a good thing.

(As opposed to staggering out at closing time…)

I’m not convinced it will increase police costs, though. But meh, I don’t exactly work as an accountant for the home office :-)

Sorry to follow up to my own comment, but this BBC news article is quite interesting on this subject - it seems not even all the drinks industry is keen to get these “flexible” licences…
