the price of life
i just read this about why america are opposed to some proposed plans to write off africa’s debts. apparently it’s because it would involve selling some gold to pay for it, and they (and a couple of other countries) don’t like that.
i don’t really know anything about all this, or would understand it if i did know, but that seems to me to be a really crap excuse. what practical use is gold to anyone? it just sits there being all expensive and waiting to be stolen by evil gangs of villains. why should anyone worry if there is a little less of it in their secret vaults if it helps some poor countries to divert more resources to where they really need it?
i’m sure there is a complex and reasoned explanation somewhere. i’m just not sure it should matter to anyone.
